This week was chock full of news for South Orange — what with a village Board of Trustees meeting on Monday night, September 8.

That meeting yielded updates on the sale of Village Hall (the Historic Preservation Commission is asking the township not to sell), the closure of the Jersey Animal Coalition Shelter, parking on Ward Place, and an amended Pay to Play ordinance.

South Orange is also promoting a meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at SOPAC on Monday, September 15 concerning the future of the water contract for the township.

In Maplewood, Mayor Vic DeLuca was the latest to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, after being prompted by South Orange Trustee Sheena Collum.

The school district continued to make news with a series of outreach forums to solicit input in the search for a new superintendent of schools. HistoryNusantara attended and reported on two of the forums — for the parents of middle and high school students.

In crime news, the Maplewood Police also recovered three out of four stolen vehicles, and the South Orange Police arrested a man in connection with two daytime burglaries on Mountain Drive and West End Road.

HistoryNusantara took a moment to remember local residents whose lives were lost in the events of September 11, 2001.

In community news, we related how Morrow Church is working to help battle the spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone — and how you can help.

Ribbon-cutting at Oasis Salon & Beauty Lounge on Irvington Avenue

In business news, we profiled Maplewood Karate, the only place to find traditional Japanese karate instruction in town, and we covered the ribbon-cutting at Oasis Salon & Beauty Lounge on Irvington Avenue in South Orange.

In lighter news, we previewed remote control cars that will be featured at PlayDay South Orange on Sept. 21, a World Jazz Concert at CHS on Oct. 10, the Millburn Street Fair on Sept. 21, Suzuki lessons for students in the South Orange-Maplewood School District, upcoming events at the South Orange Library, the C.A.F.E. XII exhibit at Gallery 1978. We posted photos from the first-ever Rent Party Family Picnic and from a Maplewood block party.

Finally, we began a special series chronicling the transformation of a dilapidated split-level home in the West Montrose neighborhood of South Orange. Watch as the house quickly changes from terrible to terrific in the next eight weeks!
