The Maplewood Township Committee appointed R. Calvin Bell as the town’s new director of the Department of Public Works (DPW) Monday night.

Bell, a Maplewood resident who is currently DPW superintendent in Keyport, NJ, is expected to begin his new position on December 8, said Township Administrator Joseph Manning.

The township interviewed five candidates for the position. Bell’s salary will be $100,000 a year.

Bell thanked the Mayor and the township. “I know I have a daunting task ahead of me, but I look forward to the challenge,” he said.

Bell replaces Eric Burbank, who is stepping down after 27 years with the department, more than five of which were at its helm. Burbank is being honored at the Hilton Neighborhood Association meeting on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at DeHart Park.

“It will be a nice goodbye for Eric,” said DeLuca, noting that Burbank was “very involved in the neighborhood association.”

In other business, the committee introduced an ordinance to establish 20-minute parking in four spaces in front of 195 Maplewood Avenue, which will be the site of the new post office.
